Do #BlackLivesMatter on Kickstarter? Assessing the Impact of Kickstarter's Support of Black Creators

Abstract

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder in 2020, many corporations displayed the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag in support of racial justice. While such expressions of solidarity may raise awareness and act as catalysts for reducing racial injustices, it remains unclear whether they lead to meaningful improvements for the communities they aim to support. This study investigates whether Kickstarter’s support for #Black-LivesMatter led to an improvement in the outcomes Black creators experience on the platform. In May 2020, Kickstarter changed the color of its logo to black and added the #BlackLivesMatter (#BLM) hashtag under it. This change was visible on every page of the platform for over a year. We analyze if this intervention led to better outcomes for Black-led projects by analyzing projects on Kickstarter from May 2019 to June 2021. Our findings indicate that while the initiative successfully increased Black creators’ participation on the platform, it did not lead to higher funding rates for Black-led projects. This may lead to disappointment as Black creators attracted to the platform by the intervention continue to experience low levels of support in line with historic disparate outcomes.
